Household Harmony: Smoothing Shared Bills with Keel

Living with others; whether it's a partner or a group of flatmates, usually means splitting the bills such as rent, electricity, internet and more.

Traditionally, this requires one person to take on the role of House Admin, paying the full bill and then awkwardly chasing everyone else for their share via bank transfer. It's a recipe for tension with your roommates, partner or anyone else you share bills with.

At Keel, we've built a better way to split bills.

1. How Shared Bills Work

Keel allows you to share bills with multiple users. Our engine calculates the individual contribution for each person based on their percentage of the bill.

Example

A $300 quarterly electricity bill, split two ways

You and your roommate split a quarterly $300 electricity bill on Keel with a flat $2 fee, equating to $151 each. The catch? You are paid weekly and your roommate monthly. Over the 13 weeks of the quarter:

You: Smart Contribution collects $11.62 each week when you are paid.
Roommate: Smart Contribution collects $50.33 each month when they are paid.

The Keel Way: Keel doesn't just wait for the due date. It aligns each user's collection with their individual pay cycle to start collecting payments at a time that works for them. Keel lets you add as many personal or shared bills as you need, helping you keep track of expenses with one regular payment.
Payment time: These funds are held in each user's secure, individual sub-account until the bill is due. When it is time for payment, Keel uses each individual collection to pay the full amount of the bill.

2. What if a Housemate Forgets About a Payment?

This is the most common fear in a shared house. In the old world, if your flatmate forgot to pay you, you had to awkwardly ask for their share of the bill.

Keel's approach changes the game and is built around fairness and transparency.

We notify early: Keel has regular notifications on bill status and a built-in dashboard so you can see if your bills are on track.
If a Smart Contribution fails: They will be notified and given options to retry the payment via PayTo or PayID. After a few days with no action, all users splitting the bill will be advised via notification.
Someone still hasn't paid their share: If the payment date is getting closer and the funds are still missing, Keel will notify all users splitting the bill with options to top up the amount instantly via PayID.

3. Fees to Split Bills

We saved the best for last — there are no additional fees to split bills!

The fee remains the same as a bill that isn't split, and is shared evenly across each user splitting the bill. A $1 fee turns into $0.50 when split between 2 people.

Our fees are based on the size of the bill we are managing, and they are split into three clear tiers:

Small Bills (Under $50): $0.50
Medium Bills ($50 – $249.99): $1.00
Large Bills ($250 and over): $2.00

All fees are inclusive of GST.
